Lawsuit filed against the Turkish government and two Turkish banks by Armenian-Americans

29 July 2010 (AP, Los Angeles)- Armenian-American lawyers filed a federal lawsuit in Los Angeles against Turkey, the Central Bank of Turkey and Ziraat Bankasi over the losses of their grandparents dating back nearly a century.

It is claimed that the heirs of Armenians killed and driven out of Turkey in 1915 are entitled to billions of dollars for property seized from their ancestors.

Now it is easier to understand why their ancestors killed all children and women. Apparently to make sure that no heirs would be left to pursue their deeds. There were no heirs left in the village of Zeve and many others simply because the whole population were exterminated in those Turkish villages by Armenians.

Were we naive or human not to kill but deport our killers? I wonder if these heirs are ready to be sued for high treason on behalf of their grandparents for cooperating with occupying foreign forces and killing their neighbours.

No amount of dollars can bring back one third Muslim population of Erzurum killed by Armenians. Who can sue for them and how?

Armenians in the First World War, Jews in the Second may sound like a good analogy. But the fact is that the two unfortunate events have no similarity at all. Armenians uprised and started killings and pillage in the region and everybody in the region suffered, whereas civil Jews were taken from their homes, collected in camps like Auschwitz and exterminated. Germany was not invaded and Jews did not betray their country and cooperated with invaders. There are two very different stories.

This lawsuit can not be taken seriously and it is shameful.

It is hard to understand why Armenians do not blame the great powers of the world of the time that preyed on Ottoman lands and seduced Armenians into rebellion for their own interests. The imperialist strategy of divide and rule caused too much suffering and losses for both sides in the region during the First World War. I hope Armenians can see the other side of the coin one day and apologize.

NB. A recent two-year study by the Turkish Historical Society has revealed that gold that was obtained from the auctioning off of Armenian assets during the Ottoman era was seized by Ally forces as war reparations in the aftermath of World War I.  Around 5 million pieces of Ottoman gold reportedly belonging to Armenians who left the empire were taken by Ally forces, possibly by Britain, according to  the society.(Hürriyet Daily News, June 22, 2012) - Dec 09, 2012
