Mustafa Kemal Atatürk |
Those who have read about Armenian genocide allegations must have come across assertions that Turkish War of Independence was aimed at extermination of minorities with the idea of founding a pure Turkish state. This assertion has been regarded as a strong proof that Turks have exerted genocide against Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Nasturians, in other words all Christian communities living in Anatolia.
İnönü Foundation has produced a calendar in the format of "this day in history" about Mustafa Kemal Atatürk who was the leader of the War of Independence, this year. I read the day's entry before I start to work every morning.
Today's entry is from 1919, the days Mustafa Kemal reached Samsun as the inspector of the Ninth Army Troops to reorganize remaining Ottoman military units and to improve internal security. What he actually wanted to do was to start the struggle to found an independent Turkish state. On May 29 he sent a ciphered telegram to General Kazim Karabekir from Havza which stated that the Entente Powers have been unjust and that they intend to give an end to our independence and to our state. Their latest cruel acts have started with making Greeks occupy Izmir and Manisa. It is twice as perilous that Italian forces which have occupied Antalya and Konya are going to be reinforced. It is clear that they have started preparations to subject cities along the coastline of Black Sea such as Trabzon and Samsun to the same fate. ... The nation can only be freed from bondage, and can live on our own lands possessing sovereignty and independently, if some earnest and honest hands drive them directly through the right way to protect their rights and independence.
Kazım Karabekir Pasha |
For this purpose Mustafa Kemal wanted reliable civil administrators to be gained to the struggle and local people to protect their villages themselves against chetes collaborating with the enemy, with whatever weapons they have got available. "
For a nation under occupation can the aim be anything else other than expelling the enemies and save the country?
